In The State of The Union address last night, President Barack Obama gave an executive order to raise the minimum wage for federal contractors. The wage will got from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 an hour.
In the above link, you can read that many felt that the move will have a positive impact on their lives. As an example, Melissa Romero an employee from the Air and Space Museum McDonald’s restaurant said “I’ll finally be able to pay my bills.”
Some Republicans felt that this idea will have a negative effect on the economy. Here is a quote from House Speaker John Boehner.
“When you raise the cost of something, you get less of it,” House Speaker John Boehner said Tuesday. “And we know from increases in the minimum wage in the past that hundreds of thousands of low-income Americans have lost their jobs. And so the very people the president purports to help are the ones who are going to get hurt by this.”
Ironically in Canada, there is a discussion about this as well. Ontario is raising the minimum wage from $10.25 to $11 an hour. There is also a campaign in Ontario to raise the minimum wage to $14 an hour. The campaign is head up by the Workers Action Centre. However, this has not been met with support from the Ontario Government.
“I know that there’s a call for $14 (but) we have to move very carefully, because this is about making sure that we retain and create jobs,” Premier Kathleen Wynne said.

Also, I will add this link. It’s the minimum wage for all the provinces in Canada.
What do you think? Should we be raising minimum wage?
