Agree or Disagree: The Senate Scandal will be the demise of the Harper Government

The year was 2004. It was revealed that the Liberal Party of Canada, led by then Prime Minister Paul Martin, was involved in an infamous sponsorship scandal. The scandal was run from 1996 to 2004 and also involved Prime Minister Jean Chretien. $2 million dollars of contracts were awarded without a proper bidding process. $250,000 was added to one contract price for no additional work. $1.5 million was awarded for work that wasn’t done.

In 2006, The Conservative Government formed a minority government.

The year is 2013. Three Conservative Senators Mike Duffy, Patrick Brazeau, and Pamela Wallin  are involved in some inappropriately used expense claims. Yesterday, Mike Duffy claimed, or if you would prefer, revealed that the Conservative Government paid a cheque first of $90,000 to pay back the expenses. Then a cheque of $13,500 to cover his legal bills. Duffy claims that Prime Minister Harper coached him to lie about the $90,000 cheque.

Interestingly enough, the next election is set in 2015. Do you think that this will be the demise of the Harper Government? Or, as Bruce Stewart suggests in the above column, Harper should resign?
