To be honest, the wording on this can be very tricky.
If I used the word Biblical values, for some there is an immediate connection to specific issues. Issues like abortion and same sex marriage. But many would look at the Bible and say that there is more then that.
Or I could have used the word traditional. Some of might have responded which tradition? There are several from different areas. Not just North America.
I needed a word that encapsulated the entire meaning of values. While some might propose that values come from a faith or a religion, there are many who have strong values that are of no religious affiliation.
This is why I used the word older. Because if I talked to some of you, you might say that things seem to have changed. And you might harken back to a time when things were different then now. You would give examples like.
-A handshake agreement was as good as a written contract.
-Children seem to have more respect for their elders.
-You worked for every penny. There was no sense of entitlement.
-If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it.
-People looked after each other. They talked to their neighbours. Not ignore them.
So two questions:
1)Do you think that the idea of values have changed? If so, is this a good thing or a bad thing?
2) Do you think we need to take a step back and reflect on “older” values? Do they seem to have more principles then what we current have now?
Look forward to reading your thoughts.
